World Mental Health Day 2025

Today reminds us how important it is to support one another.

For over 33 years, Open Age has been at the heart of our community—helping people to make connections, stay active, and improve their mental health and wellbeing.

Together, we can make a difference.

The Power of Connection: Jay’s Story

At 61 years old, Jay was referred to Open Age’s Men’s Space Walking Football by his GP. Struggling with alcohol use, two stints in rehab, and the risk of diabetes, his doctor believed regular exercise and group activity could help improve his health, reduce anxiety, and boost his social life.

When Jay first joined a walking football session, he was nervous and lacking confidence. But the warm welcome from the group made all the difference. Over time, walking football became a regular part of his week—so much so that he now plays up to three times a week. This simple step has helped Jay improve his fitness, manage his mental health, and build meaningful social connections.

Encouraged by his progress, Jay has gone on to complete a 5-week computer course and take part in Tai Chi, and gardening sessions, including other Open Age activities he once lacked the confidence to try.

Jay reflects:

“I normally do not complete anything, but walking football is something I always attend. It has helped me to refrain from drinking because I don’t want it to affect my football. I feel fitter, more energetic, and more confident. I’ve made friends, I’m happier, and even my sister says she notices the change in me. For the first time in a long, long time, I feel lucky.”

Thanks to his progress, Jay has reduced his alcohol intake and is now able to undergo a much-needed operation. His story is a powerful reminder of how listening, encouragement, and opportunities to engage can truly change lives.
